About the property

The existing 7 story Tower is now restrengthened and fully refurbished and is occupied by various Huadu entities.
Respecting its cultural and historical significance, the redeveloped 7-story tower (former courthouse) has been transformed into a modern building suitable for business, teaching, and office use. It preserves a part of the city’s historical memory post-earthquake. Located in the city center, it is adjacent to the Avon River and Victoria Park.

Platform Construction was engaged as main contractor for the full structural upgrade of the historic IRD building at 224 Cashel Street in central Christchurch. This complex project involved extensive structural strengthening to bring the building up to modern seismic and building code standards, while carefully preserving its existing architectural features.

The works included demolition of non-structural elements, reinforced concrete and steel framing, floor and roof strengthening, and the installation of modern seismic bracing systems. Platform Construction coordinated all trades and managed the logistics of working within a central city environment, ensuring minimal disruption and a safe, efficient construction process.

Attention to programme management, safety, and quality control was critical, as the project combined heritage considerations with contemporary structural requirements. The result is a fully upgraded, compliant, and resilient building that demonstrates Platform Construction’s expertise in complex structural refurbishment and strengthening projects.
